iOS 27 Public Beta is finally out, and it’s arguably the biggest iPhone software release in years. Apple has rebuilt Siri from the ground up, sped up everyday performance, and quietly fixed a handful of annoyances that longtime iPhone owners have complained about for ages.

Whether you’re an early adopter who can’t wait to try new features or someone who just wants to know if it’s actually worth the risk, this guide breaks down what’s inside the iOS 27 Public Beta, which iPhones support it, and exactly how to install it without turning your phone into a paperweight.

What Is the iOS 27 Public Beta?

The iOS 27 Public Beta is a pre-release version of Apple’s newest mobile operating system, made available to everyday iPhone users (not just registered developers) before the official public launch later this year. Think of it as a sneak peek: you get to test upcoming features months early, but in exchange, you accept the occasional bug, battery drain, or app hiccup that comes with unfinished software.

Apple typically rolls out its yearly OS update in three stages: a developer beta for engineers testing app compatibility; a public beta open to anyone via Apple’s free Beta Software Program; and finally, the polished, stable release in the fall.

This year’s public beta arrived as a near-identical build to the third developer beta, a good sign that Apple has already ironed out many early rough edges. Still, it’s beta software, so a bit of caution goes a long way.

iOS 27 Public Beta Features Worth Knowing About

This release isn’t just a visual refresh—it touches nearly every core app on your phone. Here are the standout additions.

Siri AI Takes Center Stage

The headline feature is easily Siri AI, a completely reimagined version of Siri built around Apple’s next-generation Apple Intelligence system. Unlike the old Siri, which mostly handled single commands, Siri AI can hold an ongoing back-and-forth conversation, understand follow-up questions without repeating context, and dig through personal information across Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders, and Calendar to answer specific questions.

For example, you could ask Siri to find the flight confirmation buried in your inbox from three weeks ago, then immediately follow up with “What time does that land?” without restating anything. It’s a shift that puts Siri in more direct competition with conversational assistants and finally makes voice commands feel less like a guessing game.

A few caveats: Siri AI currently supports only select English variants, won’t be available in the EU right away, and is an assistant and Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone. Some advanced on-device capabilities are limited to the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air.

Smarter Camera and Visual Intelligence

The Camera app now includes a dedicated Siri mode for visual intelligence. Point your camera at a membership card, and it can turn the barcode into a Wallet pass on the spot. Spot a flycard or an upcoming event? Siri can pull the date and details straight into your calendar without any manual typing.

Safari Gets an Organizational Overhaul

Safari can now automatically sort your open tabs by tflycard orp related bookmarks and reading list items together, and surface recently closed tabs you might want to revisit right from the start page. There’s also a new Notify Me feature that watches a webpage for changes, which is handy for tracking when a sold-out product comes back in stock.

Photos, Photong Tools, Level Up

Three new editing tools land in the Photos app. Clean Up now handles larger, more complex background distractions. Extend generates believable content beyond a photo’s original edges, useful for fixing an awkward crop. Spatial Reframing lets you adjust the apparent camera angle after the shot’s already been taken, a neat trick for salvaging a slightly off portrait.

Everyday Quality-of-Life Improvements

Beyond the AI headline features are reframings of a redesigned Screen Time experience, further refinements to the Liquid Glass visual design, general performance and speed upgrades, and an updated Passwords app that automatically swaps out weak or compromised passwords for stronger ones. AirPods users also get a companion firmware update alongside the beta.

Is Your iPhone Compatible With iOS 27?

Before you get excited about installing anything, check whether your device actually qualifies.

iOS 27 supports every iPhone that currently runs iOS 26, including the iPhone 11 and later, plus the iPhone SE (2nd generation and newer).

That said, compatibility with the base OS doesn’t guarantee every feature. Apple Intelligence, which powers Siri AI, requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, and the most advanced on-device models are reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air. Older supported devices still get the new design, performance improvements, and app updates, just without the full AI experience.

How to Download iOS 27 Public Beta Safely

Downloading beta software isn’t complicated, but skipping preparation steps is where most people run into trouble. Here’s the safe way to do it.

Step 1: Back Up Your iPhone First

This is the step people skip, and it matters most. Beta software can occasionally cause data loss, app crashes, or unexpected bugs. Back up your entire iPhone to iCloud or a computer before doing anything else, so you can restore everything if the beta doesn’t go smoothly.

Step 2: Consider Using a Secondary Device

Apple recommends installing beta software on a secondary iPhone rather than your daily driver. If you only have one iPhone, make sure your backup is current, and go in understanding that reduced battery life and app compatibility hiccups are part of the deal.

Step 3: Sign Up for the Apple Beta Software Program

Head to Apple’s Beta Software Program website and choose Sign Up (or Sign In if you’re already a member). Use the same Apple account tied to your iPhone, accept the program terms, and enroll your device. Membership is free and does not require a developer account.

How to Install iOS 27 Public Beta on Your iPhone

Once you’re enrolled, installing the beta itself takes just a few taps.

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Go to General > Software Update > Beta Updates.
  3. Select iOS 27 Public Beta from the list.
  4. Return to the Software Update screen and tap Update Now once the download appears.

That’s it. Your phone now, I’ll install the update just like a regular software release, though the file size may be a bit larger than a standard update.

Should You Install the iOS 27 Public Beta?

iOS 27 Public Beta is one of the more compelling betas Apple has released in a while, mainly because Siri AI genuinely changes how you interact with your phone day to day. If you’re comfortable with occasional bugs and you’ve backed up your device properly, it’s a solid way to get a head start on next-gen Siri, the refreshed Photos tools, and the general performance boost.

If your iPhone is your only device and you can’t risk instability, it may be worth waiting for a later beta build or the final public release in the fall, when things will be noticeably more polished.
