iPhone 18 and 18e Rumored to Launch With 9GB RAM

Apple’s upcoming iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are strongly rumored to feature 9GB RAM, an unconventional upgrade from the 8GB found in the iPhone 17 series. Powered by the new A20 chip, these models are expected to launch in Spring 2027, offering smoother performance for Apple Intelligence under iOS 27 while still falling short of the 12GB RAM required for Apple’s most advanced AI features.

iPhone 18 & 18e: A Subtle but Significant Upgrade

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has noted that Apple has traditionally stuck to clean, even-numbered memory increments: 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB. The move to 9GB RAM breaks that pattern. Industry reports suggest the change is due to DRAM supply constraints, with Apple opting for six 1.5GB dies instead of the standard four 2GB dies. This configuration would allow Apple to balance cost efficiency with performance gains, keeping the base iPhone 18 models competitive without cannibalizing the premium Pro lineup.

iOS 27 will bring tighter system-level integration with Apple Intelligence. My latest industry checks suggest Apple's lower-end 1H27 iPhones, powered by the A20 chip, will move to 9GB DRAM (1.5GB × 6 dies), up from 8GB (2GB × 4 dies) in the current A19 models, to keep the system…

Apple’s WWDC 2026 keynote made it clear: AI is the future of iOS. Features like context-aware Siri, system-wide dictation, and on-device generative tools are central to iOS 27. However, not all devices will enjoy the same level of access.

9GB RAM models (iPhone 18 & 18e): These devices will support basic Apple Intelligence features, including improved Siri responsiveness, smarter autocorrect, and enhanced dictation.

12GB RAM models (Pro, Pro Max, Ultra): Reserved for advanced AI capabilities, such as expressive Siri voices, real-time translation, and complex generative tasks.

This distinction highlights Apple’s strategy: make AI accessible to all users while reserving the most powerful experiences for premium buyers.

Why 9GB RAM Matters

Performance Boost: The A20 chip, built on a 2nm process, promises 15% faster speeds and 30% better energy efficiency compared to the A19. This helps offset the modest increase in RAM.

AI Integration: The extra gigabyte ensures smoother performance for Apple Intelligence tasks like Siri responsiveness, dictation, and on-device AI processing.

Limitations: Advanced AI features announced at WWDC 2026, such as expressive Siri voices and system-wide dictation accuracy, still require 12GB RAM, meaning they remain exclusive to the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and Ultra.

Bottom Lines

For students, professionals, and everyday users, the 9GB RAM in iPhone 18 and 18e will deliver a noticeable improvement in multitasking and AI-driven experiences compared to the iPhone 17. However, those seeking future-proof devices with full Apple Intelligence capabilities should consider the Pro lineup.

According to The News International (thenews.com.pk), Apple’s unusual RAM choice reflects both semiconductor supply constraints and its strategy to differentiate premium models with exclusive AI features.
