What to Do When Your Phone Is Frozen: 8 Proven Fixes

You tap the screen. Nothing. You tap again, harder, as if that will help. The app does not move, the keyboard does not appear, and the clock has been stuck on the same minute for what feels like forever.

A frozen phone is stressful, but it is rarely permanent. Most freezes come from a single misbehaving app, a full storage drive, or a system process that has hung. This guide explains why a phone freezes and gives you eight fixes, starting with the quickest, so you can unfreeze a cell phone without losing data wherever possible.

Really Your Phone is Frozen, or Just Slow?

Give it 30 to 60 seconds before you do anything drastic. Heavy apps, a just-finished update, or background syncing can make a phone sluggish for a short time. A truly frozen phone shows these signs:

  • The screen does not respond to touch at all.
  • The clock or an animation stays stuck.
  • Buttons do not respond, or only the physical buttons do anything.
  • It stays stuck even after waiting a minute.

If the freeze happens only on the lock screen, see our separate guide on a phone stuck on the lock screen.

Why Does a Phone Freeze?

A misbehaving app. A poorly coded or outdated app can lock up the whole interface, especially after a system update changes how apps are expected to behave.

Low storage. Phones need free space to cache data and run apps. When storage is nearly full, everything slows down and freezes become more likely. As a rule of thumb, try to keep a healthy margin of free space instead of running at the limit.

Too many apps in the background. Memory is limited. Heavy multitasking, games, and video editing can push the system past what it can handle.

An outdated or buggy operating system. Software bugs happen, and manufacturers fix them in updates.

Overheating. Phones slow themselves down when hot to protect the hardware, and in extreme cases they lock up.

A failing battery or storage chip. Hardware wear can cause random freezes, especially on older phones.

Malware or unsafe apps. Apps from outside official stores can cause crashes or heavy background activity, mainly on Android.

8 Fixes for a Frozen Phone

1. Wait a minute, then close the frozen app.

If only one app is stuck, you may still be able to get out of it. Press the Home or gesture bar, or swipe up to open the app switcher, then swipe the frozen app away. On Android, you can also open Settings, go to Apps, pick the app, and choose Force Stop.

2. Force restart the phone.

This is the fix that works in most cases, and it does not touch your data.

  • iPhone 8 and later: Press and release Volume Up, press and release Volume Down, then hold the side button until you see the Apple logo.
  • iPhone 7: Hold the volume down and the side button together.
  • iPhone 6s and earlier: Hold Home and the top or side button together.
  • Android: Hold the power button for 20 to 30 seconds, or use your brand’s combination, such as Volume Down plus the Side key on many Samsung phones.

3. Charge the phone.

A drained battery can cause erratic behavior. Plug it into a wall charger and let it charge for at least 15 minutes before trying again. If the phone is hot, let it cool first.

4. Free up storage

Once the phone responds, check how much space you have left. Delete large videos, old downloads, and apps you no longer use, or move photos to cloud storage. Clearing app caches on Android (Settings, Apps, choose an app, Storage, Clear Cache) can also help a lot, without removing your data.

5. Update the system and your apps.

Bugs that cause freezes are often fixed in updates. Check for a system update in Settings, and update your apps from the App Store or Google Play. Keep the phone connected to Wi-Fi and charged while updating.

6. Uninstall the app that caused the problem.

Think about what changed right before the freezing started. A newly installed app, or an app that updated recently, is the usual culprit. Remove it and see whether the problem stops. If the phone keeps freezing in the same app, reinstall it or look for an alternative.

7. Boot into safe mode (Android)

Safe mode loads only the system software and disables third-party apps. On many Android phones, hold the power button, then press and hold “Power off” until the safe mode prompt appears. The steps vary by brand, so check your manufacturer’s instructions. If the phone runs smoothly in safe mode, a downloaded app is the cause. Remove recently installed apps one at a time until the problem stops. On an iPhone, there is no safe mode, so the equivalent is removing recently added apps and keeping iOS updated.

8. Back up and reset the phone.

If the phone keeps freezing after everything above, a factory reset removes software corruption that nothing else will fix. This erases the phone, so back up first through iCloud, Google, or your manufacturer’s tool. Start with resetting only the settings if your phone offers that, since it is less drastic. If it still freezes after a full reset, the problem is probably hardware.

When Freezing Points to a Hardware Problem

If the phone freezes often even after a clean reset, suspect hardware. Warning signs include random shutdowns, a battery that drains abnormally fast, heat when the phone is idle, and freezes that began after a drop or water exposure. In that case, have the battery and storage tested by an authorized repair center.

How to Prevent Your Phone From Freezing

  • Keep a reasonable amount of storage free.
  • Install updates when they come out.
  • Close apps you are not using, and restart the phone once in a while.
  • Download apps only from official stores.
  • Avoid using or charging the phone in direct heat.

Final Thoughts

When your phone is frozen, resist the urge to keep tapping. Wait a moment, close the stuck app, then force restart. If the problem returns, free up storage, update the software, and look closely at recently installed apps. A reset should come last, and only after a backup.
